ABOUT TERUNYAN

Bali’s best know inhabitant is the Bali Aga, the islands oldest aboriginal who
lived here long before the Majapanhit invasion in the 14th century.
Legends has it, that the village was established on the spot, where an
ancient “Taru Menyan” tree stood – hence the town’s name. It is said that in
ancient times the lake goddess Dewi Danu was lured down from heaven by the lovely scent of this tree.
Trunyan provides evidence of how Bali’s earliest people used to live.
From the village Kedisan by the lake in Kintamani a small motorized boat takes
us to the cemetery.  Trunyan village is located at the foot of Mount Abang.
It is one of Bali’s oldest villages and presumably belongs to the first or
second migrants to Bali.
They have a tradition, which is unique. The dead are not buried or cremated,
but are just exposed to the air on a narrow spot on the bank of the lake.
From the village the body is taken to the cemetery by canoe. During the process
of decaying, there is no odor emanating from the bodies.
There are three cemeteries, one for those who are died from a natural cause, one for those that dies an unnatural death e.q. accidents or from diseases considered to
be very dangerous and one for children.
This is really strange, because the exposed bodies in Trunyan’s cemetery do not
radiate a bad odor. Many people say it is because the water absorbs the odor or
probably the tree known as Maja tree can absorb it. As a matter of fact Trunyan
village was recorded at the king’s charter in the 10th century. A temple dedicated
to the God of Bhatara Datonta was clearly mentioned 1000 years ago to be
maintained or worshipped.

The Program

We offer you total program for one day.

• We start in Kampung Kedisan near the Lake Batur.
  We shall tell you about live in the Kampung.
  You will also meet people in the Kampung and
  you can visit their houses.

• Then you go to the Aga Bali village. It is an old village
  on the other side of the lake. In this village people still live
  in the old culture of the Aga Bali.
  Your guide knows the people in the village very well so you
  can walk through the village undisturbed.
  After visiting the remains of the old
  Aga temple, the boat takes you to the graveyard of the village.

 

• After Trunyan you will get a fresh homemade Balinese meal in
  the Kampung. If you like – instead of visiting Trunyan – you can
  stay in the Kampung to help your hostess with cooking.
  Let us know in advance. 

• You will finish the day with a walk on the Gunung where you can
  see the remains of the latest eruption in 1964. It is one of the most
  beautiful panoramas in Indonesia.

The price for the whole day is 65 euro pp. for 2 persons,
60 euro pp. for 3 persons,
50 euro pp. for 4 persons or more.
Children until 12 years are free of charge.

The price is including:

• All the transfers.
• Renting the boat to Trunyan.
• The Balinese meal in the Kampung.
• Water, coffee and tea.
